Just as you can customize page content, certain styling aspects of the catalog are also customizable via website settings.
Default Website Settings vs. Website Settings for Individual Catalogs
You can set a default style that can easily be applied to all catalogs, but you can further customize individual catalogs.
To customize your default style, go to: Catalog > Settings > Website.
To customize the style for an individual catalog, go to: Catalog > Settings > Catalogs > Website Settings.
To return an individual catalog to your default settings at any time, go to Catalog > Settings > Catalogs > Website Settings and select the red "Reset to Defaults" button at the bottom.

Note About Custom Code
Use of institutionally-injected custom code within your catalog website can result in overwriting critical Catalog settings.
If you elect to use custom HTML or CSS on your website, ensure you have extracted and applied only the relevant areas of code to avoid override errors.
