Overview

Selecting the “section type” allows the user to pre-populate certain fields in the section record upon initial section creation. This feature is specific to institutions using PeopleSoft for their SIS; all other institutions should have the related permission set to deny

 

Enabling Section Type

Overview

If your institution uses PeopleSoft, there are a few configurations that will need to be defined before you can fully utilize section type. 

 

Step One: 

  • PATH: Academic Scheduling > Settings > Roles > Course Editor 

  • Set “Select Section Type for New Sections” to “Allow” for all applicable roles.

Step Two: 

  • Ensure the course record has components and primary components defined.

  • You can check that in your SIS or, if you also use our Curriculum Management program,  you can find that information in the course template (Curriculum Management > Settings > Course Template).

 

Step Three: 

  • PATH: Academic Scheduling > Settings > Templates > “Section Type”

  • Make sure options are defined for “Section Type” in the Section Template.

  • We suggest setting “Default from Course” to YES; although this isn’t essential for the “Select Section Type” modal to be triggered, it is recommended in order to take full advantage of this functionality.

 

 

Step Four: 

  • PATH: Academic Scheduling > Settings > Templates > “Registration Mode”

  • Make sure “Registration Mode” options (i.e. Enrollment Section and Non-Enrollment Section) are defined.

  • We suggest setting “Default from Course” to YES; although this isn’t essential for the “Select Section Type” modal to be triggered, it is recommended in order to take full advantage of this functionality.

 

Step Five: 

  • PATH: Academic Scheduling > Settings > Templates 

  • Make sure options are defined for the following additional fields: “Instruction Mode”, “Max Enrollment Capacity”, “Preferred Room Capacity”, and “Preferred Room Features”.

  • We suggest setting “Default from Course” to YES for all of these; although this isn’t essential for the “Select Section Type” modal to be triggered, it is recommended in order to take full advantage of this functionality.

 

Additional Note

If any of the above fields aren’t already on your Section Template, select “prebuilt fields” and then drag and drop them from the question bank over to a card on the template.

 

Expected Functionality

Upon navigating to the Section Dashboard and attempting to add a new section, if the parent course has multiple components, users will be presented with the following modal which allows them to select the applicable Section Type (Component) for the section.

  • The header of the modal will show the Display Name of the “Section Type” field (typically associated with “Component” in PeopleSoft), as defined in the Section Template.

  • The options for the drop-down in the modal are fetched from the components defined in the course record.


  • Following selection of the applicable Section Type (Component), the Section Modal will be opened, displaying certain defaults applied and allowing users to make further edits to section data (assuming their role permissions allow them to do so).

  • The full list of fields that can be defaulted from the component of the course are:

    • Instruction Mode

    • Max Enrollment

    • Preferred Room Capacity

    • Preferred Room Features

  • The Section Type field (typically associated with “Component” in PeopleSoft) will be populated based on the user’s selection in the “Select Section Type” modal (otherwise defaults from “Primary Component”). This means the field doesn’t default from the Component itself (based on user input).

  • “Registration Mode” (which is typically associated with Class Type in PeopleSoft) will have its value set to “Enrollment Section” if the “Section Type” field (typically associated with “Component” in PeopleSoft) is equal to the course’s primary component. Otherwise, it will default to “Non-Enrollment Section”. This means the field doesn’t default from the Component itself.

  • These defaults are only applied upon initial section creation. For example, if a user edits the “Section Type” field value (typically associated with “Component” in PeopleSoft) in the section modal thereafter, there are no downstream effects that would be triggered in other section fields (like “Registration Mode”, which is typically associated with Class Type in PeopleSoft), unless there are actions explicitly configured in the Section Template to trigger such logic.
